Getting to the Nam Et-Phou Louey headquarters in Muang Hiam (Houaphan Province)

To get to the start of the Nam Nern Night Safari, you can meet your guide here and travel to the start the next day, or you can travel to Ban Son Koua independently.

Departing from Luang Prabang

PUBLIC BUS: Take the bus heading to Sam Neua, which leaves daily at around 12 pm (noon) from the Luang Prabang northern bus station, and get off in Muang Hiam where the NEPL NP office is located. The bus trip to Muang Hiam is about 10-12 hours, passing Pak Mong and Nong Khiaw along the way. You will arrive in Muang Hiam by 10-11pm or sometimes even later depending on the driver.
PRIVATE CAR/MOTORCYCLE: From Luang Prabang go north on Road #13 about 100 km and turn right onto Road #1C at the Pak Mong junction (follow the sign towards Nong Kiau). Travel 200 km on Road #1C northeast to Muang Hiam. The drive is about 7-8 hours.

Departing from from Nong Khiaw

PUBLIC BUS: Catch the bus from Luang Prabang heading to Sam Neua, which stops at Nong Khiaw daily around 5-6 pm. Local agencies in Nong Khiaw can help you to arrange a ticket and to inform the bus driver to stop to pick you up. Get off in Muang Hiam where the NEPL NP office is located. The bus trip to Muang Hiam is about 5-6 hours, you will arrive in Muang Hiam by 10-11pm or sometimes even later depending on the driver.
PRIVATE CAR/MOTORCYCLE: From Nong Khiaw travel 175 km on Road #1C northeast to Muang Hiam. The drive is about 5 hours.

Departing from Sam Neua

PUBLIC BUS: Buses and public mini vans leave from the Sam Neua bus station to Muang Hiam daily at around 4pm. The trip is 4-5 hours, you will arrive in Muang Hiam by 8-9pm.
PRIVATE CAR/MOTORCYCLE: Follow Road #6 southwest towards Muang Kham/Phonesavanh. Veer right at the Ko Hing junction and follow Road #1C to Muang Hiam. The trip is 151 km and takes around 4 hours.

Departing from Phonesavanh

PUBLIC BUS: There is no direct public transportation between Phonsavanh and Muang Hiam.
You should take the 8am bus with destination “Sam Neua” and get out at the Ko Hing junction. The bus drive is around 3-4 hours. A pick-up can be arranged from the Ko Hing junction to Ban Son Khoua, the Night Safari starting village. Please contact us for more details.
PRIVATE CAR/MOTORCYCLE: Follow Road #6 northeast towards Sam Neua passing Muang Kham along the way. Turn left at the Ko Hing junction and follow Road #1C to Muang Hiam. The trip is 203 km and takes about 5 hours.

Getting to the start of the Nam Nern Night Safari in Ban Son Koua village

If you are traveling from Phonesavan or Sam Neua you will meet your guide here.

If you are traveling from the direction of Luang Prabang or Nong Khiaw, you can either meet your guide in Muang Hiam and travel to the start next morning, or you can travel to Ban Son Koua independently and meet your guide there.

Departing from Luang Prabang

PUBLIC BUS: Take the bus heading to Sam Neua, which leaves daily at around 12pm (noon) from the Luang Prabang northern bus station. You can either get off in Muang Hiam where the Head Office is located and stay overnight here (the bus trip to Muang Hiam is about 10 hours) and travel to the start next morning, or you can continue to Ban Son Khoua village (additional 1.5 hour after Muang Hiam) where you can stay in overnight in a simple guesthouse.
PRIVATE CAR/MOTORCYCLE: From Luang Prabang go north on Road #13 about 100 km and turn right onto Road #1C at the Pak Mong junction (follow the sign towards Nong Kiau). Travel 200 km on Road #1C northeast past Viengthong. The drive is about 9-10 hours.

Departing from from Nong Khiaw

PUBLIC BUS: Catch the bus from Luang Prabang heading to Sam Neua that stops at Nong Khiaw daily at around 5-6pm. You can either get off in Muang Hiam where the Head Office is located and stay overnight here (the bus trip to Muang Hiam is about 5-6 hours) and travel to the start next morning, or you can continue to Ban Son Khoua village (additional 1.5hour after Muang Hiam) where you can stay in overnight in a simple guesthouse.
PRIVATE CAR/MOTORCYCLE: From Nong Khiaw travel 175 km on Road #1C northeast to Muang Hiam. The drive is about 5 hours.

Departing from Sam Neua

PUBLIC BUS: Buses and public mini vans leave from the Sam Neua bus station towards Muang Hiam daily at around 4pm. The trip to Ban Son Khoua village is about 3.5 to 4 hours (additional 1.5hour to Muang Hiam).
PRIVATE CAR/MOTORCYCLE: Follow Road #6 southwest towards Muang Kham/Phonesavanh. Veer right at the Ko Hing junction and follow Road #1C for another 7km.

Departing from Phonesavanh

PRIVATE CAR/MOTORCYCLE: Follow Road #6 northeast towards Sam Neua passing Muang Kham along the way. Turn left at the Ko Hing junction and follow Road #1C for 7km.
